CALDWELL COUNTY, MO — Several Caldwell County residents who own property south of Highway 36 attended public meetings held recently which explained the intent of a private company, Clean Line Energy Partners of Houston, TX, to build a 700 mile high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line tabbed as the Grain Belt Express Clean Line. The line would cross Caldwell County along one of three potential routes. The utility would provide the county with significant property tax revenue and utility taxes as it transports energy from southeastern Kansas to power-hungry Eastern U.S. locations. The company is hoping that building the transmission line will open Kansas up for development of new wind energy projects. The Grain Belt project is expected to cost over $2 billion. It should create over 500 permanent jobs and more than 5,000 construction jobs. The line would carry 3,500 megawatts of power. Objections, however, are being voiced by some property owners.
