JAMESPORT, MO — What’s in the box? That’s always the big question. In this box happens to be a chicken processing plant put together by David Schafer, along with the help of several others. This box plant sets in a warehouse along 190 highway just north of the city limits of Jamesport, near the former Earth Touch Grainery. The box is made from an 8’ x 40’ shipping container and was brought by truck and put in the building to be renovated as a chicken processing plant. This “box” is a sterile environment and is equipped with running water and up to date equipment. This box has been sold and will be loaded on a truck and sent to Vermont where a farmer there is waiting to start his chicken processing plant, and expects to process 300 birds a day. Processing chickens is not a new venture for Mr. Schafer, he has been raising chickens since 1993 and developed the Featherman Equipment Company in 1999 and began selling pluckers. He has been selling the chicken pluckers for several years and has employed several area men in the manufacturing of the different parts that it takes to complete the chicken production. David first got the idea of chicken pluckers from the Hong Kong Farmers’ Market, and then the first one was made by Syl Graber of Jamesport, and now the production continues here in Jamesport. Production of the pluckers has been ongoing, and owner David Schafer, along with Ben Lane and Amanda Riley, attend conventions several times a year to sell and promote their product.
