SAVANNAH, MO — Community leaders at Savannah are grappling with how to replace an antiquated and unreliable outdoor tornado warning system. City officials want to replace a siren at the Andrew County Courthouse that has been used for 40 years. The siren is controlled through a phone line at the Andrew County jail, which houses the county communication center and it hasn’t worked for several days. That has left the town of 5,000 people that is spread over about three miles essentially without any reliable outdoor warning system. A 2010 study recommended that the city have four sirens, each costing as much as $20,000, although the price could be reduced if the town provided the poles. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s rural development program may be used to address the situation. A town like Savannah could arrange a 3.5% loan for five to seven years using this program. The council will continue to discuss the issue at its June 17 meeting.
