CHILLICOTHE, MO — The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education has opted not to outsource the school district’s food service management. After considering a proposal from a private firm during the past few months, the board realized it might be cheaper to continue handling food services within the school. Officials say total food cost from the start of the current school year to the end of April was $2.4699 per plate. This compares to a bid of $1.50 per plate from the private firm but that price excludes labor. School officials learned that the labor involves added another $1.27 onto the bid price per plate — which prompted the board’s decision to stand pat. Officials say, however, the cost of school meals will increase perhaps as much as a nickel or dime for the start of next school year.
