JAMESPORT, MO — Every two years, University of Missouri Extension holds a horticulture tour in Northwest Missouri, usually highlighting sites of interest to vegetable producers. This year, the tour focuses on vegetable-producing greenhouses in the Jamesport and Trenton area. The tour is planned for Thursday, May 30, starting with registration at 8 a.m. We will be meeting at the North Missouri Produce Auction, on Highway F, east of Jamesport. Lunch will be provided for a nominal charge by the North Missouri Produce Auction. If you intend to have lunch with the group, please arrive early enough to purchase your lunch ticket. The tour will leave promptly at 9 a.m., following tour instructions and a short orientation for the day. The farms that we visit will feature a number of innovative approaches to growing vegetables in greenhouses and high tunnels. Some of these include wood boilers for heating, solar-powered side curtains for ventilation, ridge-vent kits, solar-powered double poly inflation, and the thermal mass of a large tunnel using the Haygrove system. Participants will also visit a wind turbine with an air compressor. Compressed air can be used to power shop equipment, run an alternator, or even inflate double poly glazing. Since many of the farms are owned by Amish growers, no photos are to be taken due to their religious beliefs. To attend the tour and purchase a lunch, please contact the Daviess County Extension Center at 660-663-3232.
