5-Cent Tax Proposed for Seniors in Livingston Co.

CHILLICOTHE, MO — Livingston County’s baby boomer population is aging, and it is estimated that if current trends continue, around 40% of the county’s population will be 60 years of age or older by 2020. By 2030, that percentage is expected to rise to 50%. Based on the 2010 census, 24% of the county’s population is at least 60 years old. These facts are pertinent as Livingston County voters consider a 5-cent per $100 of assessed property valuation tax proposal to finance a proposed Senior Citizens Service Fund. There are 47 Missouri counties that have placed a similar proposal on the ballot in the past and only one county — Buchanan County, which sought a 10-cent tax — actually rejected it. Of the 15 counties in Northwest Missouri, 11 counties have a Senior Citizens Service Fund. If approved by voters, the Livingston County proposal would generate an estimated $78,964 per year. The tax means about $13.88 per household per year to generate funds to meet the needs of citizens 60 years or older, to help keep seniors healthy and in their homes.
