CAINSVILLE, MO — Cainsville R-1 High School was honored by representatives of the Missouri Northwest Regional Coalition for having the most improved seat belt use in the 2013 Northwest Region’s Battle of the Belt competition. The students increased their seat belt use from 47% to 65%. The school received $500 donated by American Family Insurance to be used for future seat belt educational programs. Some 135 schools, including 19 in the Northwest Missouri region, participated in this year’s competition. Participating schools launched two surprise seat belt checks to measure student seat belt use before and after an education campaign. In addition, schools had the opportunity to submit a 30-second video spot to encourage their peers to buckle up. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people 15 to 20 years old. Results of a 2013 survey among Missouri teens indicate 34% are not wearing seat belts, putting them at greater risk to get killed or injured in traffic crashes. Seven out of 10 teens killed in Missouri traffic crashes are unbuckled.
