TRENTON, MO — If you think opera is “highbrow” and for people who are more “cultured” than you, then you just might be in for a surprise when the Roundabout Opera for Kids comes to Grundy County next month. Trenton High School graduate Kim Jackson Carballo is the founder and administrator of the program, which utilizes students in the University of Indiana-Bloomington Jacobs School of Music to bring opera to children in grades preschool through 12. When ROK comes to Grundy County March 10-12, adults will also have the opportunity to enjoy three performances at the Hoover Community Theater. The goal of ROK is twofold: To introduce children to opera through an engaging first experience as audience members, and to give developing professional singers and instrumentalists an opportunity to hone their performance skills. The musicians, who will be on spring break during the visit to Trenton, donate their preparation and performance time and ROK provides free performances and curriculum guides to students. When the group comes to Trenton, two operas, “Mooch the Magnificent” and “The Telephone,” both comedies, will be presented. The public performances are scheduled for 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 and 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11.
