CAMERON, MO — With the drought continuing, the Cameron city council has passed a resolution officially declaring a water shortage alert. Under the city code, there are three levels of water conservation measures — advisory, alert and emergency. The alert phase calls mostly for voluntary water conservation measures although some water vendor usage is restricted. The resolution authorizes the city manager to impose a ban on non-commercial outdoor watering, water hauling for non-domestic use, outdoor commercial or public watering, and all non-essential water uses as defined under “Class 3” which includes serving water in restaurants, clubs or eating places as well as washing vehicles, using water to increase levels in scenic or recreational use or ornamental purposes, etc. The resolution is in effect for the duration of the water shortage or until the city council declares it ended. Cameron authorities estimate that unless significant rainfall occurs, a water emergency could be declared in about 110 days.
