BRECKENRIDGE, MO — This community is mourning the loss of a 12-year-old boy who died over the weekend as a result of an accidental gunshot would. Counselors from several schools were at the Breckenridge school as classes resumed Monday, helping classmates, faculty and staff cope with the tragedy. The boy, whose name was not released, was one of eight 7th graders at the school. The incident occurred Friday. Caldwell County Sheriff’s office responded to a call at 8:45 p.m. reporting that a juvenile mishandled a handgun and suffered a gunshot wound. The juvenile was taken to University of Kansas Medical Center by LifeFlight, and died the next day. In response to the tragedy, the school called a crisis team meeting Saturday morning and about 30 students visited the school during that time. Additionally, the Methodist Church opened to provide comfort to those suffering the loss.
