TRENTON, MO — The Grundy County Commission has voted to place a 1.5% use tax on the April 2, 2013, ballot. The tax would affect items purchased out of state at a cost of $2,000 or more, such as vehicles or equipment. Commissioners said the tax would basically restore one that was eliminated recently by the Missouri Supreme Court that allowed the county and city to collect sales tax on purchases of automobiles or other registered items purchased out of state. Those buying such items still pay a state tax because there is a state use tax, however without a county use tax in place those funds cannot be collected. Among the needs that could be addressed by the funds generated by the tax are a shortfall in the 911 Fund, as well as to offset losses from decreased sales tax revenue.
