CHILLICOTHE, MO — A Northwest Missouri county jail is closing immediately because of its poor conditions and a lack of money to fix it. Livingston County Commissioners say the Livingston County Jail in Chillicothe is closing immediately. Inmates are scheduled to be moved Wednesday to the Daviess/DeKalb County Regional Jail in Pattonsburg. Sheriff Steve Cox says the 34-year-old jail has serious sewer issues that would be costly to repair. And he says five full-time detention officers at the jail are not enough to properly care for the prisoners and maintain security. County commissioners also point to a drop in state reimbursements, from nearly $160,000 per prisoner in 2010 to $110,000 in 2012. Twenty-three inmates are housed in the 48-bed facility.
