SAVANNAH, MO — A little over a year after breaking ground, the grand opening of the new Andrew County Jail attracted nearly 200 local officials and citizens to mark the completion of the facility located on Savannah’s east side. The new jail was funded by nearly $6 million in grants and low-interest loans secured through the Department of Rural Development. Ceremonies marked the official end of the old jail which has been in use for the past 106 years. Public tours of the new facility were conducted. Several “inmates” were temporarily housed as a fund raising effort to benefit the community’s Backpack Buddies program. A benefit auction was also conducted which raised about $2,200 for Backpack Buddies.
