TRENTON, MO — When parents think of the words “self-defense” in relation to their children, they usually picture a good kick and a jab to the stomach when someone is physically threatening the child. There is another type of self-defense that is needed in today’s world and area students will have the opportunity to learn more about it during presentations slated for area school districts. Jennifer Schiffman, a prevention specialist for the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, will present the program “We Own the Net: Digital Self-Defense,” focusing on internet safety, cyberbullying, legal issues that arise from the use of technology and how what is put out on the internet can have long-lasting effects. The program is being presented in Trenton on Thursday, Sept. 20. Students in grades fifth through eighth at Pleasant View R-6 will participate at 9 a.m., with Trenton Middle School students participating at noon and Trenton High School students participating at 1:30 p.m. Ms. Neal said parents are invited to attend, but are asked to contact the school in advance.
