According to an article in the Trenton Republican-Times by Editor Diane Lowrey, Mullenix qualified for the “tournament of champions” in August, 2012, by winning a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament at Harrah’s Casino in Kansas City. Mullenix beat out 99 other plays to win a $200 tournament at the casino and get his $10,000 entry fee paid by Harrah’s.
He began his odyssey to the “Masters of Poker” a few months ago when he paid $50 to enter a tournament, which he won. That qualified him for the $200 tournament which he entered for free as the winner of the previous tournament. For nearly 12 hours on Aug. 11, Mullenix and 99 other players battled to become one of the final two players and earn the chance to enter the WSOP event.
It all came down to a final hand where Mullenix decided to go “all in” with his pair of aces. Mullenix only had two 10s, but wasn’t too concerned at that point knowing that there were five more cards yet to come. A pair of aces is considered good when just two players are left playing. On the flop (when the dealer puts out the next three cards), Mullenix saw a 10 sitting on the table. That gave him a triple 10 hand with two more cards still to come. His 10s held up, and now Mullenix is headed to Las Vegas.
Mullenix credits a lot of his success at cards to the “old men in Livonia” for letting him play cards with them at an early age. He continued playing a lot of poker after leaving Livonia and during his teaching career as well as his stint as a local insurance agent. Now he will play in the 2013 tournament to be held at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas.
