TRENTON, MO — Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 arrived in Trenton on Aug. 13, 2012, as part of the railroad’s 150th anniversary. A large crowd of all ages gathered at the local UP station to see the last steam locomotive built in 1944 for Union Pacific. The train was placed in freight service from 1957-1959, then was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.

The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as the Union Pacific’s “Ambassador of Goodwill.” From Trenton the train was scheduled to continue on to Polo, Mo., and then onward to Kansas City before making a return trip to Des Moines, Ia. The stop at Trenton brought GHS graduate Tim Connell back home. Connell was the engineer of the diesel engine following the steam locomotive. He is the son of former Trenton residents J.R. and Rosmond Connell.
