Webb Simpson rallied to win the 2012 U. S. Open, the first major tournament win of his career, but the real winner over the weekend was The Olympic Club golf course. Gallatin=s Brice Garnett followed up an 8-over par 78 on Thursday with a 77 on Friday and failed to make the cut in his first major event. His two-day total of 155 placed him 140th of 156 competitors striving to play on through Sunday.
No golfer finished the 72-hole tournament under par. Only three, Jim Furyk, David Toms and Tiger Woods, finished under par after the first two days of competition.
Brice did end Friday’s round on a high note by shooting par on each of his final nine holes, including No. 16, which dashed the hopes of Furyk on Sunday after his disastrous tee shot. Defending U. S. Open champion Rory McIlroy also failed to make the cut on Friday. Woods faded from contention on Saturday and failed to make up ground on Sunday’s leaders.
Garnett had nothing but good things to say about his experience of playing in one of the PGA’s major events. He will switch gears this week as he returns to the Nationwide Tour in Wichita, Kan. "Olympic Club is one really, really hard golf course," Brice told his many Facebook friends and supporters. "Just can’t miss a shot, and will make the best in the world look silly. Didn’t have my A-game, but still a great experience and memories to draw on for my next Open. Thanks for all the love and support! Best fans ever!
This week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open offers a purse of $108,000 to the winner.
