They’re young. They’re talented, and they’re looking to cap a remarkable 2012 track and field season with state medals.
Gallatin sends five Lady Bulldogs to the MSHSAA Track and Field Championships this weekend in Jefferson City. Three sophomores and two freshmen will try to give the Lady Bulldogs their first state medals since 2008.
Bailey Morrison, Kailey Elbert, Sara Lin and Kailey Salmon continued to dominate area runners on Saturday in the 4×800-meter relay. The quartet added the sectional championship to their district title in a winning time of 10:12.60 to beat second place Archie by nearly 100 meters.
Last year’s 4×800 team, which included Morrison and Elbert, finished 15th out of 16 teams in a time of 10:30.92. The Lady Bulldogs will likely have to break their own record of 9:58.32 if they want to be in the running for gold medals.
Sophomore Kaitlyn McNeely also earned a state qualifying spot at the sectional meet in a field event. McNeely finished third in the pole vault at 8’6". This is her second trip to state after being a part of last season’s 4×800 quartet.
Donovan Stout did not qualify for state in the 800-meter run. Chad Ness suffered an injury in practice last Thursday and was unable to compete at sectional in the pole vault.
In Class 1, Kelly Warford will represent Pattonsburg at state after finishing fourth in the sectional high jump (4-8).
Representing Gilman City at state are Brennon Carey, third in the discus at sectional (132-7); and Saige Johnson, fourth in the sectional 100-meter dash (27.08).
Gilman City’s 4×800-meter relay team of Morgan Mulnix, Jill Newton, Morgan Reed and Kady Sperry finished fourth at sectional in 11:14.13.
