Last Thursday was a perfect day to run a perfect race. Gallatin coaches knew it. Bulldog track athletes who gathered around the track to watch the girls’ 4×800-relay team race, suspected it, as well.

Coming off a 10:22.13 running of the race last Tuesday at Stanberry, the quartet of sophomores Bailey Morrison and Kailey Elbert, freshmen Sara Lin and Kailey Salmon, believed they had a big effort in store for Thursday’s South Harrison Relays. They were right.

Not only did they break the 10-minute mark, they broke the Lady Bulldog 3200-meter relay record that had stood since 2000. Morrison, Elbert, Lin and Salmon combined to run a 9:58.32, which beat the 9:58.72 posted 12 years ago by Kayli Burrell, Kamille Burrell, Roxi Davitt and Allison Spidle.

"All four girls have been working hard for this accomplishment and all believe the record will be broken again this year, and hopefully at the state meet," said GHS track coach Kevin Meyer. "Coach (Mary) Adams and I believe this group of girls have a tremendous work ethic and desire to excel, and will continue to work hard in these final weeks," he added. "We are very proud of them."

Salmon and Morrison also finished first and second in the 800-meter run and teamed with Elbert and Lin for a gold medal performance in the 4×400-meter relay.

On the boys’ side, Chad Ness won the triple jump and placed second in the 100-meter dash in a photo finish. Isaac Mattis took second in the pole vault.
