Two people from Lee’s Summit received minor injuries in an accident that happened at about 6 a.m. on April 21, in Daviess County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred as Elizabeth Preston, 24, Lee’s Summit, was southbound on I-35 at the 68 mile marker, 14 miles north of Cameron. She attempted to pass a 2012 Freightliner on the left hand side. The semi was driven by Gregory O’Rear, 33, Kansas City. Preston’s 2007 Toyota Sienna traveled off of the east side of the highway and began to slide sideways. She returned to the roadway and crossed the center line and struck the semi’s towed unit. Her vehicle again crossed the center line and traveled into the median coming to rest on its wheels facing south. The Toyota became engulfed in flames. The semi came to a controlled stop on the shoulder facing south.
Elizabeth Preston and an occupant in her vehicle, Alyson Preston, 24, Lee’s Summit, were both taken by private vehicle to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. They were wearing their seat belts.
The Toyota was totaled. The semi had minor damage.
The accident was investigated by Tpr. J.C. Gilliland, assisted by Tpr. D.A. Landi Jr., Daviess County Sheriff’s Department and KAW Fire.
