Roberta A. Sandy, 94, Cameron, died April 23, 2012, at the Cameron Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Roberta Arvilla Heldenbrand Sandy was born on Jan. 15, 1918, south of Winston, the daughter of Adam H. Heldenbrand and Roberta May Allen Heldenbrand. She was the tenth child of 11 children and had seven brothers and three sisters. She lived in Daviess County her entire life. She attended school at Winston and graduated as an honor student in 1935. She took several classes in business, typing, and bookkeeping by correspondence.
In 1937 she married Kenneth D. Sandy and to this union three sons were born, Kenneth David Sandy, Jr., Robert Dale Sandy, and John Michael Sandy.
She was very active in youth work in the county, including 4-H, Farm Bureau and Balanced Farming. She was a counselor at Intermediate Methodist Youth Camp at Camp Crowder for many years, then was the Dean of Women at Fayette College of the Methodist Teen group with 400 youths. She was also very active in the Kidder United Methodist Church.
In 1965 she worked for Great Missouri Life Insurance Company and in 1967 Ron Gorman came to Daviess County with Lake Viking. She worked there until 1968 when she bought Z-9, the Commercial lot, which gave her exclusive rights for Real Estate and Insurance. After this, Lake Viking Sales was born. She flew to Dallas, Texas, and took a course under Zig Zigglar, a known teacher in salesmanship. She opened her Real Estate office, Lake Viking Sales, and she has owned and operated this business over 40 years.
Roberta was a member of the Board of Cameron Regional Hospital for 42 years. She was recognized in the National Directory of Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals from 1995 through 1998.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, John, Oscar, Russell, Jesse, Lawrence, Allen, Elmer, Nellie Gooding, Helen Clark and Minnie Malcom. Her husband, Kenneth, died on August 15, 1992, after over 55 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her son, John.
Roberta is survived by her sons, Kenneth Junior, Kidder, and Robert D., Kidder; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Roberta Sandy will be held at10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Kidder United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Bram Funeral Home, Hamilton. Interment: Cameron Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kidder United Methodist Church.
