A quality education is the foundation to increasing the quality of life of Missouri’s citizens, and a strong educational system is imperative for creating a dynamic and vibrant economy. Elected officials on both sides of the isle agree that in order to attract and retain great job opportunities for the greatest number of Missourians, we must have high-performing educational institutions that are successful in producing a quality workforce that is well-prepared for the jobs of the future.

Therefore, any long term plan for improving the economic outlook of our state must focus on teaching students how to meet the challenges they will face throughout life.

While elementary and secondary education provides the foundation for learning, we must cultivate and facilitate a pursuit of knowledge and a never ending development of new skills. In essence, we must teach our children how to learn and how to teach themselves so that they are able evolve with future economic opportunities. This also underscores each individuals need for some type of post-secondary education, whether that is in the form of technical or vocational training, a two-year college, or a four-year university. Most importantly, we must make it easier for students to move seamlessly through the process at their own pace thereby ensuring the mastery of the skills and knowledge necessary to compete in our ever evolving world.

The continuum of life long learning starts a birth and ends with our final breath. As a result, it is imperative that each of us understand our role in preparing students for a lifetime of learning and achievement. This is a life long partnership between parents, educators, policy makers, employers and each of us as individuals who are responsible for our own future. For Stephanie and I, this means that Addison and Andrew must have the skills, the confidence and the desire to continue learning, growing, and embracing new opportunities throughout their lives.

Education creates opportunities and by seeking constant improvement, we strive for the greatest possible opportunity to succeed. With the proper planning and focus, we can develop a workforce that attracts top-notch companies and an economy that prospers. The pursuit of life long learning, will serve as a catalyst for fueling our economy, advancing our state, and enhancing the quality of life for all Missourians.
