High winds spawned from deadly storms caused a lot of area damage and some people believe a small twister may have dipped its tail over Gallatin.
The storms tore through the Midwest Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Feb. 28-29. Tornadoes killed at least 12 people in Kansas, Illinois and Missouri. The fierce winds flattened small towns and damaged the Branson tourist district in southwest Missouri.
Elaine Kettring of Searcy Street on the northeast edge of Gallatin said she felt a thunk that shuddered her whole house Tuesday night and woke up the next day to see the trees below her hill had been toppled over and the high branches ripped off.
Her elderly parents live in the basement and a granddaughter recently moved into the home so Elaine was grateful the house and barns on the top of the hill were spared.
The trees are one edge of the acre-and-a-half property, in a line running northeast. The tops of the trees were sheared and several trees were completely uprooted. Elaine said some of the trees were still young and green.
She also found two dismantled trampolines in the yard along with a couple of large, battered garbage ‘totes’ and pieces of tin and siding.
