Peter Steele led a group of four Gallatin R-5 wrestlers onto the awards podium following the conclusion of Saturday’s Grand River Conference Tournament held at Penney High School.

Steele, a second place finisher a year ago in the 140-pound weight class, pinned Hamilton’s Jake Angle and South Harrison’s Austin Bennett to set up a title bout with Maysville’s Blake Steiner. Steele scored a first period takedown and piled up the score before winning a 10-1 decision.

Chad Ness pinned South Holt’s Colby Markt and Maysville’s Logan Flannery before taking on Hamilton’s top-ranked Matt Schieber in the 170-pound championship match.

Schieber scored a takedown to go up, 2-0, but Ness escaped. Another takedown and escape made it 4-2 heading into the second period. Ness escaped from the bottom position and scored a takedown to take a 5-4 lead, but Schieber tied the score before the end of the period.

Schieber picked up one point for an escape in the third period and that was the winner for the Hornet senior.

Third place finisher Trystan Sunby decisioned Hamilton’s Trey Lund, 14-7, lost to Polo’s Jacob Hicks, then wrestled back to third place in the 145-pound division with victories over Kyle Spillman of South Harrison (11-3) and Colby Poff of Stanberry (5-3).

Jimmy Dale also finished third for Gallatin in the 220-pound weight class. He started his day with a pin of John Henry Parkinson of Maysville. Dale lost to Hamilton’s Derrick Hughes, 16-8, in a back-and-forth match, but fought back to defeat Albany’s Conner Brown. Dale pinned Tarkio’s Sean Quimby in the second period after trailing, 5-2.

Justin Anderson (113) and Michael Stanley (182) each won a match for the Bulldogs during the tournament.

Stanberry won four championship matches to overtake Maysville and Polo in team standings. Stanberry totaled 135.5 points to edge Maysville’s 122. Polo was third with 112. Gallatin placed seventh with 77.5 points.
