Even while many things were going wrong for Gallatin’s boys in the late stage of Friday night’s game against Albany, enough were going right to preserve a Grand River Conference victory.
The Bulldogs survived 21 turnovers, many coming in the fourth quarter, to defeat a feisty Albany team, 60-56, and stay in a three-way tie for first place in conference standings, along with Stanberry and South Harrison.
The Bulldog win didn’t come easy. Gallatin led, 52-42, early in the fourth period but with a minute to play the Warriors had whittled the gap down to 56-54. Back in front now by four points, the Dogs got breathing room with an improbable play.
With 16 seconds remaining, Derrick Lin threw a half-court pass to Dexter Daniel, who had to go high and off-balance toward the out-of-bounds line to get the ball. All he could do was flip the ball behind his back to keep it in play. Chris Cameron, streaking in from the opposite wing, grabbed the ball in stride and make a layup to make it a 60-54 game and at least a two-possession lead.
The Warriors got the last bucket, but Gallatin got the win.
Cameron finished with 14 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. Daniel added 13 points with 11 rebounds and four steals. Brandon Hunt chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Gallatin exits the Hamilton Tournament with GRC road trips to Hamilton (Jan. 31), King City (Feb. 3) and Maysville (Feb. 7).
