Four-day school week prompts questions, concerns

About 70 people gathered in the Gallatin R-5 gymnasium on Jan. 18 to discuss the pros and cons of the four-day school week which is being considered by the Gallatin school board.

The crowd included about 20 current school employees and five school board members. Interspersed among the crowd were a number of educators who have retired from Gallatin R-5, as well as other patrons, who voiced questions and concerns about the effect of the four-day week on our children.

Superintendent Dennis Croy and Principals Chris Elbert and Toni Cox presented the advantages of the four-day week and the financial reasons that the change must be considered. And they answered all the tough questions, except one: What cuts will be made if the school does not change to the four-day week? That topic was not covered. According to Mr. Croy, that topic would not be good for morale.

Complete coverage of the first public meeting will be in the next issue of the Gallatin North Missourian.

You are invited to participate in the discussion which will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan.25, in the high school gymnasium.

Informational literature will be given to those attending. Superintendent Dennis Croy will conduct the meetings, using a question-answer format.

This is an opportunity for parents, school district patrons or anyone interested to give voice to concerns or questions about the proposed scheduling change. You are urged to attend the next meeting to better understand the decisions ahead.
