According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2003 Ford Expedition, driven by Fred Fishman, 53, Dallas, Texas, struck a deer in the passing lane of I-35 about three miles south of Winston. The driver managed to move the vehicle into the median.

A southbound 2007 Chrysler Sebring, belonging to an unknown person, struck the same deer and became stranded in the passing lane.

Allison Hayden, 22, Kansas City, was driving a 2004 Pontiac, also southbound. She struck the Sebring from behind. The impact pushed the Sebring into the median and into the rear of the Expedition.

Lacey L. McVey, 19, Des Moines, Iowa, a passenger in the Sebring with the unknown driver, was standing outside the vehicle and leaning into the rear passenger compartment when it was struck from the rear. McVey was thrown clear by the impact and received only minor injuries. He was taken by Daviess County Ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

All three vehicles came to rest in the median facing south. The Pontiac had extensive damage; the Chrysler was totaled, and the Ford had moderate damage.

The accident was investigated by Cpl. L. Newman, assisted by Tpr. T. Garton and Tpr. J. Cross, the Daviess County Sheriff, KAW and Cameron Fire Departments.
