County Commission
Carl Carder moved to move the sheriff’s office to the first floor in the present University Extension office and voting room and move the Extension office to the current sheriff’s office on the second floor. David Cox seconded. Cox – yes; Carder – yes; Sims – no. Motion carried.
James Lewis, bridge supervisor, met with the commission regarding a closed bridge in Lincoln Township and repairs needed to upgrade a bridge in Washington Township. They will be installing a tube in Colfax Township today, then working on the bridge construction in Jefferson Township.
Bills were audited and paid.
Melvin McFee, Jefferson Township, met with the commission regarding a culvert on 140th Street. A 30-inch pipe will be needed.
Daren Adkins, associate circuit judge, and Ben Becerra, sheriff, met with the commission discussing additional personnel and larger office space for the sheriff’s department.
At 10 a.m., as advertised, the preliminary budget hearing was held. No individuals from the public attended.
Shad Mort, Monroe Township, met with the commission regarding the purchase of a tube for private use. He was informed to contact the township.
In the afternoon, the commission inspected the construction project in Jefferson Township and the proposed installation of a tube in Colfax Township.
Carl Carder contacted Burns & McDonald, engineering firm, for a Bridge Engineering Assistance Program (BEAP) evaluation on two bridges in Washington Township and one bridge in Lincoln Township: 3960007, 0330004, and 0530001.

Sheriff’s Office
Ronnie Smith, 34, Altamont, was arrested Dec. 21 for the theft of 48 bales of hay from a pasture on Titan Avenue. The hay belonged to Dave Shewmaker. Smith allegedly hired two men to haul the hay to someone in Jamesport. Smith told the sheriff’s office that he had sold the hay, but that there was a mixup and that he would make it right with Dave Shewmaker. Six days later, on Dec. 16, Smith had not contacted Shewmaker or paid him for the hay. Smith posted $10,000 bond.
Candace Bonnett, 39, and Christopher Stute, 25, both of Joplin, were charged Dec. 21 with possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute, class B felony. The arrests were made during a traffic stop on northbound I-35. Trooper A.K. Griffin made the stop and requested Sergeant M.A. Wilhoit and K9 Charlie. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed marijuana, a marijuana pipe, and psilocybin mushrooms. Bond for each subject was set at $50,000.
Donald Beshears, 26, Jamesport, was arrested Dec. 20 for three counts of failure to register as sex offender. He is being held on $25,000 bond.
Teneisha McAbee, 19, Kansas City, Kan., was charged Dec. 23 with failure to appear on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. She is being held on $1,500 bond.
Michelle Martin, 34, Coffey, was arrested Dec. 24 for misdemeanor resisting arrest. She is being held on $500 bond.

The courthouse will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, in observance of New Year’s Day.
