While the holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends, it is also an opportunity to reflect on where we have been and decide what we want to achieve in the year ahead. As 2011 comes to a close, I am reminded of a year filled with economic uncertainty, political unrest around the globe, and significant events that will forever change the world.
If we are serious about reaching our full potential and creating a sustainable economic recovery, we must commit ourselves to addressing the difficult issues plaguing our state and nation.
With each legislative session comes a unique set of challenges. This year, the primary focus will once again be on ensuring a solid financial foundation for our state government. While we have made many difficult decisions over the past two years to reduce government spending, there is still much work to be done. With another impending budget shortfall, we will need to look at all aspects of state government in order to make ends meet. If done responsibly, we will methodically make these decisions in a manner that facilitates a transformational vision for our state government.
To facilitate economic growth and long term prosperity, the decisions we make in Jefferson City must be focused on creating free market economic opportunities for Missouri’s citizens. All programs must be subject to a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure Missouri’s taxpayers are getting a return on their investment that is helping to strengthen our economic foundation. Attracting new companies and encouraging continued growth and investment of existing businesses is critical for fueling our economy. I am committed to fighting to improve the economic climate for everyone in our state and not just those who can afford to hire a lobbyist.
While I will miss Steph and the kids, I am ready to return to Jefferson City and get back to the business of limiting and improving our state government. It is never easy and it will not happen overnight, but it is imperative if we are going to better the quality of life for Missouri’s citizens. Most importantly, Missouri’s elected leaders must acknowledge the failed policies of the past and commit to doing things better in 2012 and beyond so that we are able to get Missouri moving in the right direction and back on a path to prosperity.
