We come at last to the moment we’ve been waiting for, the chance to meet the central figures in “The Drams Of Christmas,” Joseph and Mary!
As we draw near, we are astonished to hear Joseph say: I can’t marry her now! We planned for so long; she was so young and lovely. Now she’s with child, and it is not mine! I asked her, “Whose is it?” She answered, “It is God’s!”
Of course all men are children of God. But she would only say, “It is of God!” I am a man of standing in this community. What will they say if I marry her now? They will know it is not mine; they will laugh me to scorn! I will send her to her cousin’s; she can have the baby there. And when its over we can be married in dignity.
She went. She came back, saying, “It is of God; I will have it here!”
Dear God! What can I do? I could put her away privately; but nothing is private in this village! They are so cruel like wolves! They will stone her. I cannot do this to one so young, so lovely, so helpless. I, too, will believe that this is of God. I will take her to the land of my fathers. I will raise him as if he were really my own. He will never know he is not mine.
And Jesus grew in wisdom, and in strength, and in favor with God and man. And when he became a man, he described God: He said, “God is like a father!”

If Joseph and Mary could speak to us this Christmas, they might say something like this – God is a mystery! God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. Try as we might, we cannot understand the infinite mind of God.
As a child who cannot comprehend grown-up ways, yet trusting the adult to do what is right, so we can trust God! Someday we will grow up. Meanwhile, much about Christmas remains a mystery!
God is not a mystery! Love came down at Christmas; Love is now living among us. We do know about crowded motels, musty stables, babies, dirty diapers, 2 a.m. feedings, government regulations, every one for himself, make do with what you’ve got, and unexpected company.
So, when God sought to communicate His divine thoughts to us, he spoke to us humans in terms we could clearly understand; and they called his name Jesus!
There’s a lot we do not know about God and about life! But, we do know enough about God to worship and serve Him! We do know enough about life to be a loving and caring people! What better time than Christmas to start living life based on the answer God has given us! Amen!
