One game into the 2001-12 season, Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs have already accomplished one important goal: play on Thursday night in their own tournament.
Gallatin registered a 59-37 upset of fourth-seeded Newtown-Harris on Monday by running rings around the taller, but slower Lady Tigers. The Lady Bulldogs twice led by as many as 30 points in the rout, which, by the final score, represented a 34-point turnaround from the outcome in last year’s GIT consolation matchup.
The Lady Bulldogs’ success in their opener was highlighted by the fact that the Lady Tigers return their best two players from the team that beat Gallatin, 43-31, a year ago.
The Lady Bulldogs out-rebounded their opponents, 34 to 21, despite a height disadvantage on the boards. Newton managed only four offensive rebounds in 32 minutes.
Gallatin now faces the difficult task of matching up against a veteran Hamilton team that hasn’t lost a GIT contest since dropping the 2008 championship to Gallatin. The Lady Hornets, led by junior Elsie Greenwood and senior Katrina Grossman, blistered Tri-County, 98-13, in Monday’s first game.
The Lady Bulldogs built a double digit lead Monday night well before the end of the first quarter. In addition to multiple buckets off turnovers, Gallatin lit up the scoreboard from the arc with three-pointers from Sara Lin, Kailey Salmon and Kaitlyn Hefley. The Lady Bulldogs finished with a 54% success rate from extended range (7 of 13).
Lin led all scorers in the game with 23 points, including 15 on 5-for-8 shooting from the three-point arc. Salmon finished with 14 points and Hefley chipped in eight.
Hefley led the Lady Bulldogs on the boards with 10 rebounds. Tory Wood added eight. Lin also chalked up six steals and six assists.
Gallatin’s victory was the only upset of the first round on the girls’ side. Trenton bested Gilman City, 76-31, and Maysville defeated Winston, 63-29.
Thursday’s slate of girls’ games opens with Hamilton against Gallatin at 4:30. Trenton takes on Maysville at 7 p.m.
