Competition of a scholarly nature brought dozens of regional high school students to Central Methodist University this past week for the annual CMU High School Math-Science Contest.

The contest drew 87 students from 15 regional high schools, including Winston R-6, according to CMU Professor of Chemistry Dr. James “Tiger” Gorden, event coordinator.

“This is always a lot of fun,” Gordon said afterward. “It is also a lot of work, but our CMU student assistants are fantastic,” he note of the nearly 50 university students who helped out.

The event kicks off with a knowledge-based round of questions. After that round ends, the students are all given a raw egg and some balloons and other materials; the teams construct a device that they hope will keep the egg from breaking when dropped three stories inside CMU’s Student and Community Center.
