Buckles was the last living American veteran of World War I until his death on Feb. 27, 2011, at the age of 110 in Charles Town, W.Va.

The grave marker was placed in the family plot between the graves of his parents and alongside the graves of his brother and sister.

Buckles was born Feb. 1, 1901 north of Bethany. He started school in Coffey. He enlisted in the Army in 1917 at the age of 16. His final resting spot is in the Arlington National Cemetery. The Miriam marker is identical to the one at Arlington.
