Daviess County deputies and Gallatin police officers became involved in a search for two shoplifters fleeing from the Cameron Wal-mart on Oct. 15.

The subjects drove to Gallatin in a Toyota Camry. A male passenger later identified as Gregory Dana fled on foot in Gallatin and was apprehended.

The female driver, Carrie McClain, fled in the vehicle with a 9-year-old girl and was going too fast to make the turn at Missouri 6 and Missouri 13 North. The vehicle went down a large embankment on the northeast side of the intersection.

The two occupants left the scene of the accident in an unknown vehicle and were eventually located at a residence on East Berry Street in Gallatin. They fled from the house and were apprehended hiding behind a shed near East Market and North Maple Street. Neither needed medical treatment.

Although McClain denied shoplifting, several stolen items were found in the child’s possession. McClain told police that she fled because she was afraid of going to jail and admitted to crashing the vehicle in an attempt to flee from the flashing lights. MULES showed that she has a misdemeanor warrant in St. Joseph for stealing. Her criminal history includes drug possession, paraphernalia, DWI, and passing bad checks.

McClain, 32, Trenton, was arrested for felony endangering welfare of a child and leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held on $35,000 bond. Dana, 54, Trenton, has been charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

Larry and Steven Belshe reported Oct. 13 that batteries and miscellaneous items had been stolen from their property on Saber Road east of 285th Street in Lock Springs. Four batteries were taken from a grain truck, as well as a CB radio and fire extinguisher. Three batteries were taken from a combine, along with miscellaneous tools, and the glass door was destroyed. A shed also had about $100 worth of damage and stolen items. Property damage had also occurred at an unoccupied residence, and copper was taken from the basement. Total value of damaged and stolen items is approximately $4,575. This investigation is ongoing.

Robert Quinn reported Oct. 14 that batteries and miscellaneous tools had been stolen from his grain truck on 230th Street, west of Unity Avenue in Lock Springs. The batteries were valued at $600, and damage to the battery cables was estimated at $400.

 County Commission

James Lewis, bridge supervisor, discussed problem areas in the county in Jefferson and Colfax Townships. A Decker Construction representative met with them concerning the bridge replacement on 105th Street in Jefferson Township. In driving the piling, they encountered a sand bar and bed rock. MoDOT specifications require an 8’ minimum piling embedment necessitating a 4’ deep rod socket to be pre-bored into the bedrock. David Cox moved to approve the additional work. Randy Sims seconded. Cox – yes; Carder – yes; Sims – yes.

Carol Antle, Jefferson Township, met with the commission regarding an erosion problem on her property at 112th and Ridge Avenue. She was referred to the Soil Services office.

Ben Becerra, sheriff, met with the commission concerning the need for adequate storage and office space and grant applications for deputy salaries.

Bills were audited and paid.

Randy Sims executed a request for release of funds for the Public Water Supply District #2 grant.

Becky Simpson, Extension Council, submitted a copy of their recently adopted modified FMLA policy.

Shad Mort, Lake Viking Association, reported on the status of his emergency plan. He will submit it this week to the commission.

The commission contacted Brian Teel, Salem Township, informing him that they have researched the matter of the road location in section 31. Since there are no culverts or bridges, the commission has no control. A certified surveyor filed his reports in the Recorder of Deeds office, and the question of the location of the property line is between landowners.

John Griffin, Grand River maintenance, thanked the commission for removal of brush.

Don Tolen, Jackson Township, submitted photos of a bridge on Reel Avenue. The county crew was notified to make repairs to the floor.

In the afternoon, the commission inspected roads and brush removal in Liberty and Colfax Townships. Individual landowners are making progress. They met with John DeWeese on 100th Street, discussing drainage and CART rock.

Ben Becerra, sheriff, reported that he has made a schedule for the Local Emergency Planning Commission’s "flow study" of hazardous materials on I-35 and State Routes 6 and 13. They also discussed the status of the budget for his office.

These are the unapproved minutes of Oct. 17, 2011. All commissioners were in attendance. Minutes were approved.
