Davin Robidoux, an on-the-rise musician set to perform at next year’s Chautauqua, held a neighborhood concert the evening of Sept. 8 outside his parent’s home on West Berry Street in Gallatin. Davin, who accompanies himself on guitar, is a self-taught musician.
"I was always interested in music," he said. "When I was a kid I’d sing over a tape on an old karaoke machine. We had a piano in the back room and I taught myself to play the piano. Then I bought an old guitar and started picking around on it."
Davin, the son of David and Peggy Robidoux, a 2001 GHS graduate, didn’t do any public singing, not in church or the high school choir.
"I sang to myself," he said. "I was pretty shy. I’d listen to others who thought they could sing and were actually tone deaf. I thought maybe I was one of those people who really couldn’t sing."
Fortunately, a friend heard him play the guitar and sing and became a big fan.
"He said I had talent, but I just thought he was being nice," Davin said.
His friend had Davin play and sing every time there were people around. They, too, had only good things to say about his music and slowly but surely Davin began to believe in himself.
He was booked at his first paid performance at Cable, Wisc., last year. The resort liked him so much they invited him to come back to perform on the same day this year. The show in Gallatin was a practice run. He stopped over at his parents’ home in Gallatin on his way to Cable.
Davin and his wife Erin live in Smithville. He works for Transportation Security Administration. Erin is a customer service supervisor for AirTran Airways.
Davin is scheduled to perform on center stage at the Daviess County Chautauqua next year. In the meantime, he will be performing at a casino in Kansas. He’s set to have a demo finished by early 2012.
Davin said he enjoyed the chance to play for his hometown audience. He likes to establish a comfortable relationship with his fans, relax, joke around a bit, and try out some new material.
"I’d like to come back soon and do another front-yard concert for anybody who’d like to show up," he said.
