Patton said the dome was in rather bad shape and it would take three or four weeks to complete the job. He would follow these basic steps: power wash the metal on the outside; apply primer; patch the rusted-out holes and caulk the seams; two coats of elastomeric, (a rubberized coating that is a Conklin Roof product); paint the clock face black; then move inside and replace the rotted lumber; lastly, caulk the cracked glass. Patton said his company mostly restored and moved historic buildings. Working on the courthouse dome was a fairly new experience for him because the dome is such a unique architectural feature. He was assisted by his son, Trevor. The work will cost about $12,500 according to the Daviess County Commissioners. The dome will require yearly preventive maintenance. [Staff Photo/TLH]
