Area farmers enjoyed a reprieve from the oppressively hot conditions with significant rainfall and cooler temperatures over the past week or so.
According to Kirby Payne at the Farm Service Agency in Gallatin, rainfall amounts were as follows: July 30 – 2.31 inches (first significant rain since June 27); Aug. 6 – .06 inches; Aug. 12 – .57 inches; Aug. 16-17 – 1.51 inches. Payne said the crops looked really good until we had three weeks of extremely high temperatures. He noted that one of the earlier rains benefitted the southern part of the county, but the northern didn’t get much out of it. He added that it was too early to tell what the crops would do. It depended on whether we receive more rain. The picture is of a soybean crop surrounding a pond located about 12 miles south of Gallatin. [Staff Photo/TLH]
