The Daviess County Commission and the International Academy of Science signed a long-term lease agreement on the facility located at 611 West Johnson Street. The facility will house a program to help veterans transition into the high-tech job market. It will also include an Acellus Learning Center for the community.
The International Academy of Science is a not-for-profit, 501c3 organization established in 1985 under the laws of the State of Missouri. They currently operate a school specializing in math and science with a campus in Blue Springs, Mo. Additionally, they have online students in each of the 50 United States.
Acellus has been deployed in schools nationwide, helping to prepare hundreds of thousands of students for success in math and science. The Academy intends to expand their Acellus Learning Program to that location with the eventual goal of establishing a high-tech community college. Classes are slated to begin this fall.
The agreement is a 10-year lease where the Academy of Science pays $1 per year for the first two years. For the balance of the lease, rent is $500 per month. The Academy is responsible for improvements; the premises are leased to them "as is." There is a provision for two 5-year terms of renewal at identical terms, contingent upon the cost of insurance.
The building was originally constructed by Everett Boyd for Sunrise Center, a privately-operated nursing home. The Lincoln Group acquired the property, when they began operating the Daviess County Care Center, and leased the building to Access II. In November, 2006, the Lincoln Group donated the property to the county. The county executed a lease with Access II in April, 2007. The building has been vacant since Access II relocated in the Gallatin Area Industrial Park.
The International Academy of Science brings together scientists and entrepreneurs from around the world for the advancement of science and scientific education. Concerned by the ever-growing reports of students placing lower in International Mathematics and Science testing, researchers at the International Academy of Science developed the powerful Acellus Learning System.
