How many towns can boast of having two survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor enjoying coffee at the same time in the same café, almost 70 years after the attack?? Not very many … it’s such a rare circumstance … but it happens in Gallatin on a fairly regular basis!
Jesse Reynolds, left, and Jub Tomlinson, right, gathered with the "boys" at the Corner Café on Main Street on May 27, 2011. Both are longtime Gallatin residents.
On Dec. 7, 1941, Jesse Reynolds was the chief cook aboard the U.S.S. MacDonough, which was at berth in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked and forced the United States into World War II. Jesse is now 95. He has just received a commendation from Congressman Sam Graves, which has been read into the Congressional Record.
John (Jub) Tomlinson, 88, was an 18-year-old sailor stationed at Pearl Harbor when the island was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Jub was going to submarine school on the naval base there. He was attached to the U.S.S. Oklahoma anchored with the fleet in harbor, while he lived in Navy housing.
If you happen to see these two fine gentlemen around Gallatin, give them a wave and a salute.
