The Gallatin R-5 Board of Education approved a lighting proposal from M& W Electric out of Chillicothe to remove and replace the current lighting in the high school gym during their regular meeting held May 18. The total cost of the project is $6,811.60. The savings from the installation of the more efficient lighting is expected to pay for the project in 2-1/2 years.

An agreement was approved with Asset Services to do a complete inventory of all district property. This information will be kept in several secure places in the event of an emergency or disaster. The cost of this service is $2,635.

Bids were accepted for fuel from MFA Oil; dairy products from Anderson-Erickson; bread products from Hostess; other food items from Kohl Supply.

A therapy contract from Dusty Bench was approved.

The board discussed the current non-certified openings for bus drivers, a maintenance supervisor and a school nurse.

Summer work projects, including sealing the parking lots and replacing windows in the football press box was discussed.

Superintendent Dennis Croy reported on his activities, legislative updates, summer projects, budgeting and requisitions.

Toni Cox gave the elementary report on attendance, enrollment, grades, screenings for different classes and programs, Kindergarten Round-Up, elementary awards ceremonies and activities.

Chris Elbert gave the high school report on the calendar enrollment, attendance and end of course testing results. He reported excellent results in nearly all of the subject areas tested.

Rick Lin gave the summer activity schedule for camps and athletics. He presented the list of students who have completed the A+ program.

The board entered executive session for the discussion of personnel.

The extra duty list as presented by Mr. Elbert was approved. At this time there are still four extra duty positions to be filled.

The board discussed the Head Start facility and purchase of a scissor jack for maintenance work at the school.

The resignation of Bert Swopes as maintenance supervisor was accepted.

The board discussed the position of special education coordinator. Mr. Elbert has been in charge of this area. It was the feeling of the administration that someone with a special education background would be better suited for the position. Mandi Hemry, current speech teacher for the district, was recommended and approved for the position. Her responsibilities will begin on July 1.

Next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, in the high school library.

Board members attending were Brice Terry, Jesse Bird, Tim Bradford, Priscilla Whitt, Bill Irby and Tim Tadlock. Trent Dowell was absent. Also in attendance were Superintendent Dennis Croy; Board Secretary Lynda Swopes, and Principals Toni Cox, Chris Elbert and Rick Lin. Teacher representatives were Kelli Milholland and Casey Moberly.
