The North Daviess R-3 School Board discussed future senior trips and ways to make money at the May 12 meeting of the board, taking into consideration that the junior class will not be having concession stands next year. Supt. Becky Morris said that the classes could work at Worlds of Fun four times per year and earn a substantial amount for their trips. Also, they would like to see the school calendar be offered again as a fund-raiser. Sophomores could sell non-food items, and freshmen could have community dinners. The board will discuss this further at the July meeting.
It was reported that Amanda Wynne has participated and completed the required board member training. James Horner will be going to training in June.
Supt. Morris presented the board with a list of policies that they should consider approving. The board adopted all policies as presented by Mrs. Morris.
The board voted unanimously to keep the CDs in the bank.The support staff salary discussion was tabled until next month, due to the changes with the upcoming move to the Jameson building.
The extra duty salary schedule was accepted by the board, with the provision to add the academic team leader.
Supt. Morris discussed upcoming maintenance projects for the summer, painting and repairing a few walls, nothing major. All projects should cost less than $2000. The maintenance plan was accepted as presented.
Supt. Morris announced that this year’s prom on April 9 was a success. A dinner was served before the dance, with the sophomores serving while soft music played in the background.
Gregg Hartley reported that the spring music program was held on May 5 at the elementary, and it went well. Spring pictures were taken. Family fun night had a good turnout. Average attendance for the month was 95.52%. The Stanford test results were in. There was an end-of-year party for the Reading Tutoring with ice cream and games on April 30.
Students enjoyed the all-school field trip to Wallace State Park on May 9. The elementary school is looking forward to the field trip to Science City on May 18.
The board entered into executive session at 8:15 p.m. to consider employee matters. At 8:48 p.m. they returned to regular session with the following decisions: The part-time secretarial position was offered to Callie Heckenbach, by a vote of 5 to 1. The part-time cook position was offered to Patricia Baker by unanimous vote.
Full-time teaching positions were offered to Michael Smith and Zachary Morrison by unanimous vote. Mary Cypert was offered a full-time teaching position by a vote of 4 to 1.
Sherry Siever’s original contract was voided, with four yes votes and one abstaining.
The next board meeting was set for Monday, June 20, 2011, 7 p.m. at the elementary school lunch room in Coffey.
Board members attending the meeting were Cecil McCrary, Jason Lewis, Lee Courter, Jessica Nelson, James Horner, and Amanda Wynne. Debbie Ray was absent.
