An unseasonably raw and windy day was no deterrent to Gallatin track and field athletes, who came home with qualifying spots in all three of their events at the Class 2, District 7 and 8 sectional held at Richmond High School on Saturday.
For the second year in a row, Donovan Stout won the sectional title in the 800-meter run after previously placing runnerup at district. Stout, who ran 2:07.80 in winning Saturday’s race, will try again to qualify for the state final in Friday’s 4:45 preliminary race. He failed to qualify for last year’s final after finishing fifth in his prelim heat.
Isaac Mattis matched the GHS school record in the pole vault on Saturday and will compete at state this Friday at 11 a.m. Mattis cleared 12′ to finish fourth in the sectional competition. He currently shares the school record with Phil Gooding.
The Lady Bulldog 4×800-meter relay team of Bailey Morrison, Kaitlyn McNeely, Kaitlyn Hefley and Kailey Elbert finished third in Saturday’s sectional in 10:41.10, but will be looking for better conditions and a better time at state on Friday. The first GHS freshman girls to qualify for state since 2007, when Ashley Beck was a member of the fourth place 4×800-meter relay team, they will run at noon.
