With patience and some good communication skills Alex trained a yearling heifer to accept a saddle. Alex rides Sis around the neighborhood and uses her to get the cattle up out in the pasture. He bought the calf when she was two weeks old. She was raised on a Jersey milk cow named Betsey. He led her around at first and then started working with her to ride last summer. Sis, who is part Holstein, doesn’t have to be tied up; Alex just lets her roam. Alex said he asked his folks for a horse, but they wanted him to wait until he could buy his own, so he broke a cow to ride instead. Alex is the son of Rex and Susan Pittsenbarger. [Staff Photo/TLH]
