Yesterday we observed a fairly large snake coiled around several thin black snakes. We did not see the larger snakes head.
One of the smaller snakes hit the water and swam away. The group was in high grass near the water, in a pile. I would not have seen them but my dog barked, something he does not usually do. Dog was bitten by a poisonous snake a year ago and was down for a week in spite of treatment. A week later we were fishing in the same area and he hunted up a cottonmouth, which we identified and killed with a hoe.
Cottonmouths do not have black babies. So what the heck did we watch for ten minutes. The larger snake remained coiled. Markings were similar to a cottonmouth and we did not see the head for identification. We left as the fishing was better than snake watching. While we were watching our dog grabbed something and shook it and pitched it away into tall grass. Time to leave!!!
I have been searching the internet and can find nothing to identify our observations. Can you help us?
