Yesterday’s election attracted a scant 16.12% voter turnout, but that’s not to say ballot decisions were without drama – even hours after the polls closed.

Two elections in Daviess County appeared to end in tie votes this morning! Vote totals for Pattonsburg mayor were an identical 24 ballots cast for both incumbent Gene Walker and for Alex Sperry. A tie vote was also tallied for North Daviess R-3 School Board candidates James Homer and Chris Nelson, each with 53 votes.
Obviously, both of these examples underscore how every vote counts. The North Daviess school election is also a reminder how final election returns – not just votes cast in Daviess County – determine an outcome. In addition to the votes cast in this county, one vote within the school district boundary also was cast in Harrison County. School officials confirmed that James Homer will take a seat on the R-3 Board of Education after all votes cast are tallied.
As this edition goes to press, a determination as to who will serve as Pattonsburg mayor is not yet known.
A special election could be the solution. Election officials say, however, that this is an expensive proposition for the entity involved that’s viewed as a last resort. In previous instances, sometimes a solution arrives when one of the candidates retires from his candidacy, thus leaving the other to serve the term in office.
Election Results
