Gallatin R-5 enrichment students, their parents, and their enrichment teacher, Kim Brammer, attended GEM (Gifted Enrichment & Motivation) Day at Bell Prairie Elementary School in Kansas City North on March 26.

GEM Day is sponsored by the Gifted Association of Missouri and is offered to students who participate in gifted education programs. Mrs. Brammer taught two students sessions entitled, "Slime and Other Polymers." Mrs. Brammer’s students had the opportunity to attend two student sessions of their choice. Parent sessions were also available.

Fifth grade students Hayley Michael, Jade Wayne, Briar Roll, and Patrick McNickle participated in GEM Day.

Hayley attended "Challenging Games" and "Scientists are Creative!" She stated, "I liked the "Challenging Games" class best because we played lots of games."

Jade attended "Gardening for Kids" and "Kitchen Chromatography." She said, "I liked the "Gardening for Kids" class because we planted cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, and flower seeds in yogurt cups."

Briar attended "Kitchen Chromatography" and "Slime and Other Polymers." She stated, "I liked Mrs. Brammer’s slime class. We made slime with glue, borax and water. We also made insta-snow. It was a cool class!"

Patrick attended "Sonobe Cube" and "Exploring Creativity with Balloons." He said, "My favorite was "Exploring Creativity with Balloons." We got to make a balloon dog, bunny, and anything else we wanted. I made a sword and a helmet."

Fourth grader John Gibson attended "Sonobe Cube" and "Game Time!" John said, "I thought "Sonobe Cube" was cool. We made origami pieces to make a cube."

Third grade students Riley Hagan and D.J. Schlaiss had a great time at GEM Day.

Riley attended "Ecosystem Jenga" and "Yoga." Riley stated, "Yoga was my favorite class because I really didn’t know any of the positions."

D.J. attended "Game Time!" and "Check Mate Challenge." He said, "I liked "Game Time!" because there were a whole bunch of different games to play."

Second graders Emma Qualman and Jothan Kelepolo as well as first grader Taylor Morrison learned many new things at GEM Day.

Emma attended "Cartoon Drawing" and "Cupcake Decorating." She said, "Cartoon Drawing" was my favorite because we learned how to draw cartoons, and I made a woman and a man."

Jothan attended "Fun with Magnets" and "Hand Made Music." He stated, "In "Hand Made Music" we made a story and tambourines. We learned that our bodies are instruments."

Taylor attended "Welcome to China!" and "Cupcake Decorating." She said, "Welcome to China" was good. We got to use ink and make all kinds of different signs."

Mrs. Brammer stated, "GEM Day is a wonderful way for gifted children to learn new skills and have the opportunity to interact with other gifted students from different schools."
