About 21 teachers from the North Central Council of the Missouri International Reading Association gathered on March 24 to visit the Squirrel Cage Jail in Gallatin with a guided tour by David Stark.

The group then attended a meeting and evening meal at Cycles. Debbie Sweatman, Title I Reading and Reading Recovery teacher at Searcy Elementary, spoke to the group on “Parents as Partners.” She described several books that offer tips to guide parents to use reading sessions effectively and improve fluency. She discussed picture-oriented books, online books, and books with game boards. She mentioned books that could be obtained through the county’s public library, which she said works well with the school and community.   IRA offers members new approaches to teaching literacy, easy ways to stay up to date on the latest research, and opportunities to connect with local literacy leaders. The mission of the International Reading Association (IRA) is to promote reading by continuously advancing the quality of literacy instruction and research worldwide. The Association provides outstanding professional development and supports excellent teaching, critical research, and promotion of the lifetime reading habit.
