Heavyweight Myrick McLey made it to the district championship match before falling to Brookfield’s Derek Scates. Sterling and Peter Steele each won final district matches of the day to finish third in their respective weight classes. Jimmy Dale persevered with a fourth-place finish in the district 215-pound weight class.

Brothers Sterling and Peter Steele will participate in the state tournament for Gallatin, and they share something in common besides a family relationship. Sterling will open the tournament with a match against Isiah Clark of Versailles, a 26-6 junior. Peter’s first match will be against Lexington’s Dallas Lamphier, a 36-7 junior. Clark and Lamphier met in last year’s state fifth place match at 135 pounds, with Clark emerging the winner.

Sterling Steele stands 27-13 in the 135-pound weight class. Peter is 30-8 in the 140-pound class. He finished 2-2 in last year’s state tournament.

Jimmy Dale, 12-6, and Myrick McLey, 26-13, will make their first state tournament appearances for Gallatin.

Dale will face Whitfield senior Wyatt Salisbury, 37-15, in his opening match. McLey squares off against Principia junior Garrett Moulton, 13-13, in his first match.

The MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships will be held this Thursday through Saturday in Mizzou Arena on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. Gates open to the public at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Class 1 first round matches begin at 10 a.m.
