Old Hill is located one mile west of Jamesport on Route NN, then three-quarters of a mile north.
Old Hill is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county, according to Lanita Sconce Smith of the Daviess County Historical Society. Sadly, it was also one of the most overgrown cemeteries. None of the stones were visible and it could have easily been mistaken for an overgrown patch of briars, brush, trees and stumps.
Grant took on the project for his Eagle Scout award. He organized the work and with his team of helpers pitching in, the project was completed in a couple of weeks in the middle of winter. Now Old Hill cemetery can be seen from the road and conveys respect for those resting there. Pictures may now be taken of the stones long forgotten, Smith said, which is a godsend to descendants.
Freeman Detweiler, the landowner, made it possible for workers to get into the cemetery. He will oversee the care of the cemetery from here on.
If you know of a cemetery in need of help, please contact DCGS President, Lanita Sconce Smith, at 660-684-6174, evenings or email [email protected].
Grant is the son of Allison and Warren Ward of Gallatin.
