She attended schools in Carlow, Gallatin and Jameson where she participated in basketball, baseball and pole vaulting, graduating from Civil Bend High School in 1935. After graduating Mid helped her Dad on the farm for a brief time before starting her working career at Fitters Grocery and Bakery as a clerk. It was there she met her future husband Dean Welch. The couple was married Dec. 8, 1945, in Troy, Kan., and returned back to Gallatin where they cared for Dean’s elderly mother. Mid owned and operated the Welch Café in Gallatin as well as working in several of the local restaurants cooking and waiting on the customers. Mid never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. She was employed at the JC Campbell furniture store in Gallatin for many years where she sold and delivered furniture. She was employed at the Green Hills Action Agency in Gallatin for seven years. In the early 80’s Mid started working at the Daviess County Courthouse where she dedicated 17 years to maintenance and mowing, never shying away from hard work. Mowing was her true passion and through the years she mowed many yards in town. She was a Jack of all trades and a master of many, always doing the task at hand with a smile on her face, and eager to go the extra mile.
Mid was a member of the Busy Bee Quilting Club in Civil Bend and the Bowling Association. She took great pride in her bowling talents and looked forward to playing with her friends each week. She also enjoyed playing cards, and had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying the time she spent fishing and hunting. Mid was a kind and gentle person, who had a deep appreciation and love for her family and friends, always there to brighten the lives of others. She will be sadly missed but not forgotten.
